External Counter Pulsation (ECP)
External counterpulsation (ECP) therapy is a non-invasive, non-surgical outpatient chest pain therapy approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). ECP treatment applies pressure through inflatable cuffs on the lower limbs causing increase blood flow back to your heart.
On top of that, it also encourages blood vessels to open new pathways for blood to flow to your heart. These pathways eventually become “natural bypass” vessels that help relieve symptoms of angina if your coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked.
Research shows many people report improved symptoms for up to a few years after ECP treatment. They say they experience:
- Fewer and less frequent symptoms of angina, including chest pain.
- Improved ECG response to exercise
- Increase in energy.
- Increase exercise duration.
- Reduced need for medication.
Mechanism of Action
Increased blood flow induces shear stress on the lining of blood vessel wall which triggers release of :
- Nitric Oxide : vasodilator to reduce blood pressure
- Growth Factors : to stimulate angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels)
Other health benefits of ECP
- Improves stroke recovery
- Improvement in Erectile dysfunction
- Improves glucose tolerance
- Increase blood flow to kidneys
- Improves perfusion in retinal areas
- Reduces liver cirrhosis
- Improves Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
- Reduces insomnia
- Improves asthma symptoms
- Relieves sinusitis
Treatment Process
Treatment is administered through three pairs of external inflatable cuffs that are applied around the lower legs, upper legs and buttocks. These cuffs continuously inflate and deflate between phases of the heart beat which is monitored with an ECG. When your heart is relaxed (diastole phase), the cuffs inflate sequentially to increase oxygenated blood supply to the heart muscle. When your heart beats (systole phase), the cuffs deflate, facilitating cardiac unloading. An additional feature that we provide is inflatable cuffs over both the arms and forearms as well to further improve overall circulation.
Treatment Regimes
Recommended a total of 35 hours for optimal results
- 1 or 2 hours daily
- At least 5 days per week for 4 to 7 weeks
